Vehicle Warning Lights
Understand Your Warning Lights With Renfrew Chrysler
When you purchase a Dodge, RAM, Jeep or Chrysler car, truck, or SUV from Renfrew Chrysler, you are purchasing a vehicle built to the highest standards. However, every vehicle is a complex amalgamation of tens of thousands of parts, and sometimes a few of those parts go wrong. Thankfully, your vehicle has a complex system of self-checks and warning lights to notify you should something be amiss.
Here at Renfrew Chrysler, we want to help you with all your car, truck, and SUV needs. That’s why we have this helpful guide for you to follow so you understand the various warning lights your vehicle has, what they mean, and what to do if one should appear.
Check Engine Light
You will have almost certainly seen this warning light before, as it appears every time you start your vehicle as the engine runs a self-diagnostic. Should everything check out, this light should then disappear after a short time. If it does not, that means the self-diagnostic system has detected an issue.
Should the light appear and remain on, it means there could be a minor malfunction. It is still safe to drive your vehicle, but you should make an appointment as soon as possible to have a professional Renfrew Chrysler technician inspect it.
Should this warning light appear, and begin to blink, stop driving your vehicle immediately. This means the self-diagnostic system has detected a malfunction currently happening in your engine, and continuing to drive may cause serious damage. Call us immediately and we’ll have your car, truck, or SUV towed in so we can fix the issue.
Tire Pressure System (TPS) Warning Light
Most new Dodge, RAM, Jeep, and Chrysler vehicles contain a TPS system which continuously monitors your tire pressure. Should this warning light appear, it means one or more of your tires has low tire pressure. Check your tire pressure, and reinflate your tire(s) to the proper PSI; then contact our service department at Renfrew Chrysler to have them inspect your tires as there may be a puncture.
Should this warning light illuminate and begin to blink, it means one or more of your tires has experienced a sudden drop in pressure. Immediately pull over and call us for assistance as it is unsafe to continue driving the vehicle. Remember, a serious puncture or leak can cause a blowout, resulting in a loss of control of your Dodge, RAM, Jeep or Chrysler.
Oil Change Required Light
Fairly self-explanatory, this light indicates that it is time to change your oil and oil filter. Contact our experienced service technicians at Renfrew Chrysler to arrange a convenient date and time to have your oil and filter changed. While you can continue to drive your vehicle, don’t delay too long! Clean oil is critical to keeping your engine healthy, and ignoring oil changes to too long can cause serious engine damage.
Oil Pressure Warning Light
When this light illuminates, it means your car, truck, or SUV has detected low oil pressure. Oil is the lifeblood of your engine, so stop driving the vehicle immediately. Continuing to drive can cause serious damage (and serious repair bills). Contact us and we’ll have your vehicle towed so we can begin diagnosing and repairing the issue.
Windshield Washer Fluid Low Light
Another fairly self-explanatory light, this warning indicator will illuminate when you have little or no windshield washer fluid left. Fill the reservoir yourself or bring your vehicle in to Renfrew Chrysler and we’ll be happy to do it for you!
Note: Never fill your windshield fluid reservoir with pure water. Unlike windshield washer fluid, in low temperature water freezes and expands, which can cause rubber hoses and plastic containers to crack. So avoid costly repairs by using only Renfrew Chrysler recommended windshield washer fluid!
Coolant Temperature Warning Light
If the coolant temperature warning light comes on, it means that your engine has begun to run at a higher temperature than it should. Continuing to drive your car, truck, or SUV may cause serious engine problems, such as overheating or warped cylinder heads. Have your vehicle towed to Renfrew Chrysler and our skilled service technicians will quickly fix this issue to get you back on the road!
Transmission Temperature Warning Light
While typically this light illuminates when your transmission is operating above its normal temperature, this light can also indicate gear issues, programming problems, or other issues. Regardless of the exact cause, this warning light indicates a serious issue, and it is important that you stop immediately. Contact Renfrew Chrysler immediately and we will have your car, truck, or SUV towed to our dealership so our expert service technicians can diagnose the exact issue.
Brake System Warning Light
Another warning light that you most likely have already seen, as it illuminates whenever you engage your parking brake. However, if the light is on and you have confirmed that you parking brake is disengaged, it could mean there is an issue with your vehicle’s braking system. You may continue to drive your vehicle, but brakes are a critical safety feature of your car, truck, or SUV, so we recommend bringing it in to Renfrew Chrysler as soon as possible.
ABS Fault Light
Should this light illuminate, it means there is a fault with your Dodge, RAM, Jeep or Chrysler's Antilock-Braking-System. You may continue driving your vehicle, however, do so with the knowledge that your ABS system may not operate as intended. Because of this, we recommend bringing your car, truck, or SUV to Renfrew Chrysler as soon as possible.
Traction Control Light
Yet another warning light you probably have already seen, particularly during the winter months, this light is associated with your vehicle’s Traction Control System. If this light is blinking, is means the system is working to reduce wheel slip. If the light is solid, then it means the system has been deactivated. If you have not manually disengaged this safety system, it could mean there is a fault. The vehicle is still drivable, but we recommend having the service technicians at Renfrew Chrysler investigate the cause as soon as possible.
Your Electronic Stability Program light may flash during wet or snowy conditions as the program works to maintain control of your vehicle. This is normal, just as when the light remains solid after manually deactivating the system. However, if the light remains on and you have not disabled the system, then the computer has detected a fault. Your vehicle is still drivable, but it is recommended you contact us at Renfrew Chrysler to have this safety system fixed.
You will have almost certainly seen this warning light before, as it illuminates upon start-up while your vehicle’s computer runs a self-diagnostic. If this light should remain illuminated however, it means the system has detected a malfunction. You can still drive your Dodge, RAM, Jeep or Chrysler, but know that in the event of an accident your airbags may fail to deploy or deploy improperly. Because of this, we highly recommend you schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible.
Cruise Control Light
A light you’re certainly familiar with, this light indicates that your car, truck, or SUV’s cruise control system is ready or already in use. Use your vehicle’s control to adjust your speed, resume, or turn off your cruise control. Should the cruise control or any of its associated controls fail to operate as designed, please contact us at Renfrew Chrysler to schedule a service appointment.
