How To Correct Your Car While Sliding or Skidding on Icy Roads

While there are a number of things you can do to avoid having your vehicle slide while driving on icy roads, there are a few basic tips to help avoid making a bad situation worse:

  • “Get your foot off the accelerator” – There’s a good chance that your accelerator is what got you into this mess in the first place. Remove your foot from the accelerator and carefully get it to the brakes.
  • “Don’t slam on the brakes” – Check your brakes. If you have a newer vehicle, you almost certainly have Anti-lock Brakes. Turning on the ABS keeps your wheels from locking up, which means on a soft surface like snow, you’ll want to pump them softly, rather than slam them.
  • “Steer into the skid” – Turn your front wheels in the same direction your vehicle is sliding. If the rear of your vehicle is sliding to the left, turn to the right and vice-versa.
  • “Don’t oversteer” – Don’t panic. You don’t need to whip your car around and get into a worse situation. Cranking on your wheel will do nothing but potentially make the situation worse.

Winter means beauty for the normal people, but for the driver, it means mean-taxing and alarming. Due to glassy nature of the Jack Frost, it can be straightforward for a motorist to to slide on the ice while piloting his speed machine. If the driver avoids driving on the icy streets, then he won’t skid. I think this is the common advice for an operation. But if any kind of urgency arises and he needs to travel, then what would he do? In that case, he should follow the above hacks to avoid sliding on icy roads. Apart from these considerations, he can also use snow tires for reducing the probability of skidding with more traction on the icy surface.

  3. Elena Plunkett says:

Snowfall makes it difficult to drive a vehicle. Under-inflated tires with lower tread depth could not generate better traction on the road surface covered with snowfall which could eventually lead to an accident. So, tire pressure should be inspected properly and if necessary should be properly inflated. Apart from this, tread depth of the tire should be inspected at a regular interval and if necessary should be replaced with suitable substitutes to get better control over the vehicle.
